After all, the last thing that the Blues need is to be embroiled in a significant contract saga. If he was desperate to sign a new deal, he would have signed it months ago – but it’s clear he’s looking to keep his options open.

We all saw at Arsenal how disruptive a long-term saga can become – in the case of Alexis Sanchez – and so this is clearly something that Chelsea will want to avoid.
